Stayin’ Alive

I think the worst time to have a heart attack is during a game of charades…or a game of fake heart attack.~Demetri Martin~

We never know when we may have to perform CPR on a loved one or stranger that needs our help. Even though I took a CPR course, I know I would still worry about performing CPR correctly.

A small study done at the University of Illinois Medical School, showed that the students and doctors participating in the study, were better able to do the correct number of chest compressions per minute while they were listening to “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees. The song from “Saturday Night Fever” has a near ideal rhythm to jump-start a heart that has stopped.

The American Heart Association has been using the song for two years as a training tip for CPR instructors.

Dr. Matthew Gilbert, a medical resident that participated in the study has since revived patients by keeping the song in his head while he performed CPR. He also noted that a song by Queen has a similar beat but doesn’t think “it is appropriate.” The song…..”Another One Bites The Dust!”
